What is the preparatory faculty and what is it for?
International students coming to study in Ukraine, experience language difficulties right after arrival in the country. To help newcomers overcome such challenges, each university has special welcome teams. This is a group of foreign students who already study in Ukraine. They spend a few weeks together with the newcomer, giving him/her an introduction into student life at their university.
In Ukrainian Universities, the preparatory faculty is a special educational program with duration of 1 academic year (7-10 months). At the preparatory faculty students study Russian, Ukrainian language or English language. Also they will get the special disciplines required depending on the future specialty chosen language of science such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, geography, history, and literature. After completing the preparatory faculties the student pass through an examination. In case of a successful passing of the examination, the student receives the Certificate of the preparatory faculty. This certificate gives the student a right to enter any Ukrainian university without entrance examinations. Studying at the preparatory faculty starts on the September, 1st, every year depending on the formation of groups (6-8 students in group).
At the same time the most effective tool in avoiding complications is mastering the Ukrainian or Russian language. This can be done at the preparation courses during the first year of staying in the country, as well as with the help of Ukrainian peers, who are usually very eager to help students from abroad to learn the language.
